In many Belgian cellars, the lowest point is below the sewer level – wastewater and rainwater must be actively pumped. The example of Pumptech demonstrates why submersible sensors have proven more reliable than floating switches.

## Rainwater and Wastewater Management Below Sewer Level

Many cellars in Belgium are below sewer level. Natural drainage of wastewater isn't possible there – it must be pumped. The company **Pumptech** provides suitable pump systems to homeowners and building managers. Besides wastewater, rainwater is often collected in underground tanks for use in toilet flushing.

## The Role of Water Level Measurement

Whether for rainwater or wastewater tanks: the water level must be reliably measured to accurately trigger the pump control. For a long time, float switches were used – but especially in wastewater operation, they proved problematic: floating particles or foam impair their function, switches can become dirty and fail. The consequence: uncontrolled water levels, overflowing tanks, or unnecessary pump activation.

## Reliable Alternative Using Submersible Sensors

For over 15 years, Pumptech has been using **submersible sensors** for level measurement – specifically, the analog **ATM.ECO/N** from STS. The sensor placed at the tank bottom measures the hydrostatic pressure, which is proportional to the water level. The signals control the pumps in real time: at defined thresholds, pump 1, 2, or 3 turns on. Alerts at maximum level are also possible.

## Why Choose the ATM.ECO/N

After tests with several providers, the ATM.ECO/N stood out due to:

- a completely sealed, corrosion-resistant steel membrane
- moisture filter on the cable connection to protect the measuring cell
- long service life without maintenance
- fast response time and stable level measurement

## Product Note

**Important:** The *ATM.ECO/N* model has been discontinued. Modern alternatives with comparable performance are available for similar applications – we are happy to advise you on suitable products.

## Conclusion

For Pumptech, switching from float switches to piezoresistive submersible sensors has clearly paid off. The precise control of pumps, high reliability, and low maintenance ensure a permanently stable operation in rainwater and wastewater tanks.
